Inspirational Brides

‘We met at work; I chased him,’ says Louise of John. ‘Well, how can you not chase a man who brings cannoli around the office on his birthday? We kept our romance a secret for a long time.’ John didn’t know he was going to propose until a few days before he took Louise on the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb.

‘I didn’t want to do the Bridge Climb,’ says Louise. I complained the whole way to the top. And when we got there, John proposed. It was unexpected, and I was so surprised!’ It took the couple a year to plan their nuptials and they set the date for Louise’s grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary. The ceremony venue? John’s alma mater, the University of Melbourne.

Invitations were letterpressed in black on ivory card. At Romeo Bastone, Louise’s gown was made by Josephine. The heavenly mermaid-style combination of lace and tulle and garlanded straps took form over several months. Says the bride, ‘I was so excited every time I tried it on. The process was so enjoyable and very relaxing!’ The bridesmaids’ dresses in a soft lavender hue, and studded in a pattern of sequins, were the perfect foil to their vividly pink and crimson bouquets. John arrived at the chapel with his groomsmen in a Porsche limo. Louise came by Bentley, and carried a trailing bouquet of simple white Phalaenopsis orchids.

To the surprise of all their guests, Louise and John kicked off the reception with their bridal dance. The tune was I’ve Got The World On A String, made famous by Frank Sinatra, but on this occasion sung by Louise’s dad, Oscar. ‘It was one of the most special moments,’ says the bride. Their venue, The Italian, required little styling. Louise says: ‘It has a lot of character already.’ The cake was a riff on the bride’s gown, and underneath the ‘tulle’ of icing were flavours of bacio (hazelnut), white chocolate and raspberry, and red velvet. The day went off without a hitch and the hitched headed off on five weeks’ honeymoon to Europe.
